January 24, 2025, marked a significant day for us at SDGforHer. We celebrated International Day of Education by visiting a primary school in Iwaya, Lagos. Our mission was to empower young girls with financial literacy skills through our HerLittleKolo Program.

The event was designed to educate girls aged 5-11 on the importance of saving money and being financially responsible. We spent the day with Basic 5 and 6 girls, engaging them in discussions, storytelling, in-class activities and peer-to-peer learning. The girls were encouraged to ask questions and express their feelings, making the experience interactive and enjoyable. Our team of dedicated volunteers played a crucial role in the success of the event. With over five volunteers in attendance, we were able to provide personalized attention to the girls, ensuring they grasped the concepts being taught.

The impact of the initiative was evident in the feedback and excitement of the girls to learn. We registered over thirty-five girls for the savings challenge, where they were taught how to set savings targets. Each girl set a personal goal to save over a period of twelve months. To ensure the girls stay on track, the SDGforHer team will conduct quarterly check-ins to monitor their progress. At the end of the year, we will reconvene to celebrate their achievements and find out how much they were able to save. The HerLittleKolo Challenge is more than just a financial literacy program; it’s a movement to empower young girls with the skills and knowledge necessary to take control of their financial futures. By providing them with the tools to make informed financial decisions, we are helping to break the cycle of poverty and create a brighter future for generations to come.

As we celebrate International Day of Education, we are reminded of the importance of providing quality education to all, especially girls. At SDGforHer, we are committed to continuing our work in empowering young girls through financial literacy and education. We would like to extend our gratitude to our volunteers, partners and the school administration for their support in making this event a success. Together, we can create a brighter future for all.
